Extracurricular Activities at HMS

Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities. To learn more about a club or activity, select the name in the drop-down below.

Student-led clubs are initiated, created, and led by students at each individual school campus where the club is active. A student who wishes to organize a non-school sponsored, student-led club must obtain prior written consent from the school principal. These clubs are not governed by school officials, but a club monitor is present at the time of student-led club meetings held on school campuses. Parents or legal guardians must complete and sign a permission form for students to participate in any club or activity before their child may participate.

Battle of the Books

Purpose:
Battle of the Books is a middle school extracurricular opportunity for students who enjoy reading and discussing books. Battle of the Books members are given a list of 8 books to read and attend meetings prior to the competition to discuss the books. Students who wish to be considered for this club are required to take a preliminary test and complete the application packet. The students with the ten highest scores and who participate in the club meetings will be chosen for a competition which is held in late March/early April each year. All middle school teams meet for a quiz bowl contest. Students compete against their peers on content-related questions pertaining to the assigned books. Competition date, time, and location are given to parents when students have completed the application process.

Chess Club

Purpose:
The purpose of the HMS Chess Club is to provide students with an opportunity to engage with other students at HMS to learn and play the game of chess.

Meetings:
Grade levels rotate throughout the week during Flight Time.
Various after-school competitions will take place. Each will be communicated by Mr. Dickens during Flight-Time and reminders will be on morning announcements and weekly newsletters.

Crochet Club

Purpose:
Recent studies offer remarkable evidence that crochet improves mental focus and alertness—even after just one session. In other words: Crochet sharpened reaction times. Kids showed better readiness and focus.

Beginner Club– Students learn how to crochet basics and finish projects. Currently, we are making Bookmarks. Advanced students come to this meeting to help teach skills and lead the beginners.

Intermediate/Advanced Club - Students learn advanced crochet skills. Students can choose any project to work on during this time.

Meetings:
Every other Thursday during Flight Time.
Beginner and Intermediate/Advanced Levels meet on opposite weeks.

STEM Club

Purpose:
STEM Club is for Heritage Middle School 6^th, 7^th and 8^th grade students that are interested in engineering and science to research and move to a competitive level. Club members are selected based on their willingness to participate, academic interest, ability to work well with others, and behavior. Students wishing to become members must submit an application, fill out the parent permission slip, complete an essay and submit teacher recommendations.

Meetings:
After school several days per week from Oct. - April

Competition:
All club members are required to participate in the Spring STEM Fair.

Student Council

Purpose:
Students meet to organize and carry out projects to help the school and the community during the school year.

Some of the projects the Student Council has conducted in the past have been the Penny Wars for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, book donations for elementary students, a mitten tree for The Well, fund-raising projects to purchase special items for the school, and sponsoring dances the student body.

Robotics Club

Purpose:
Robotics is for Heritage Midddle School 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who are interested in robotics at the competitive level. Students wishing to become members must submit an application, fill out the parent permission slip, and complete an essay.

Competition:
Competitions are held October through January at the County Level. Teams winning at the County Level qualify for moving onto State Competitions in the Spring.

School Sponsored Activities

The Buzz

Purpose:
Students work together each morning to produce the school daily announcements in a live broadcast to every classroom.

All 8th grade students are able to audition to become part of the Announcer Crew, and to test to become a member of the Tech Crew.

Students who pass auditions and tests rotate throughout the school year to produce this live news show which is shown daily.

Auditions to become a member of The Buzz News Crew take place at the beginning of each school year.

Fall & Spring Musical

Purpose:
Love to act, sing, dance, paint, and make new friends? This is the place for you! The fall play is held every November and is the culmination of months of rehearsal. Auditions generally run in September for this non-musical show. The spring musical auditions are typically in December with performances in March or April.

The cast and crew positions are open to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and you do not have to be enrolled in a theater class. Students should prepare for auditions as much as possible, since not everyone can get a role. However, we try to get as many kids involved as we can.

This is a great experience that builds friendships, confidence, and an understanding of theaters at a higher level. There are many different aspects of the theater, and we encourage students to investigate these various areas and collaborate with their peers.

Cost:
There is a small cost per cast and crew involvement which is determined per show. This information is communicated to all interested students prior to each audition.

VOX

Purpose:
Vox is an advanced Vocal Ensemble composed of approximately 10%-15% of the total choir who practice together every Friday after school. Vox performs within the school community and at local community events. The vocal group performs coffeehouse performances at local restaurants, community events, and professional events such as album recordings, live, professional concerts and National Anthem performances at collegiate and professional sporting events.
